CBSE Grading System 2022 (Class 10)

The new grading system will have a five-point scale, in which students will be awarded grades from A to E. This grading system was implemented to eliminate the schools from showing the numerical scores on the report card of each student in order to eliminate the unhealthy comparisons among students.

The nine-point grading system employed to measure the scholastic achievements of students are given in the below table.

Apart from this, a student is provided with CGPA which stands for cumulative grade point assessment which defines the average of grade points in all main subjects.

CGPA = Sum of Grade points obtained in 5 main subjects/5

i.e. if the grades obtained by a students in main subjects are given below -

Sub Grade Grade Point

Subject 1 A2 9.0

Subject 2 B2 7.0

Subject 3 C1 6.0

Subject 4 B2 7.0

Subject 5 A1 10.0

Then, CGPA is calculated as -

CGPA = Total Grade / No of Subject

= 39 / 5

= 7.8

CGPA is the statement of subject-wise performance in the certificate of a continuous and comprehensive evaluation that is in class 10 and class 12 certificate.

Key Points (CBSE Grading System)

  • You can see numerical scores in the assessment of theory/practical papers in external subjects. The CBSE Board will also indicate grades in the marks sheets in addition to numerical scores in subjects of external examinations. Grades will be shown only in internal assessment subjects.

  • Five types of grading are available to show the result, i.e. A, B, C, D & E.

  • You have to score a minimum of 33% marks to qualify for the exam.

  • In Senior School Certificate Examination, in a subject involving practical work, you have to obtain 33% marks in theory and 33% marks in the practical separately.

How to calculate percentage from CGPA?

Students can also calculate the subject wise indicative percentage of marks. They just have to multiply Grade points of a subject with 9.5. Say if in a subject a students has got grade point 7 then the average percentage on the subject will be 7 x 9.5 = 66.5

Advantages and Disadvantages of CGPA System

We can find the following merits and demerits points for the CGPA System :

Advantages of CGPA

  • The unhealthy competition among the students can be minimized.

  • Students can analyze and calculate their strengths and weaknesses and they can work on them.

  • The best part of CGPA is it decreases the pressure of getting high marks as the actual marks are not mentioned in the report cards.

Disadvantages of CGPA

  • The CGPA doesn’t show the accurate performance of the students.

  • Due to the grading system, children tend to perform less because they know they will achieve the targeted grade even by committing a few mistakes.
